"Depression, if it hits you, is not a weakness but a sickness."
In a June 2015 interview with the Examiner Bertrand opened up about his recent struggle with depression and how it has motivated him to raise funds and awareness for Lifeline Support.
Bertrand calls his depression "circumstantial", suffering a bad year that included sickness, dashed political hopes and the passing of his beloved dog CB. Joining the Black Dog Ride is an attempt to heal as well be healed, noting the power of traveling by motorcycle to improve his emotional state.
